How Much Does AI Audiobook Narration Cost?

Updated September 3, 2026

TL;DR: on LeapFun, narration is billed per character: about one credit per character on standard voices, 1.5 per UTF-8 byte on Leap Ultra. An 80,000-word novel is roughly 480,000 credits — one Pro month ($59) or two to three Creator months ($19). A human narrator is typically quoted per finished hour and a novel is 8–10 finished hours. Compared with a human narrator

Professional narrators are usually quoted per finished hour of audio, and a finished hour takes several hours of studio and editing time; an 80,000-word novel runs eight to ten finished hours. Rates vary widely by market and experience — the point of comparison is structural: with AI narration the cost scales with characters and the turnaround is hours, but you trade away the performance of a skilled human reader and, at some retailers, eligibility (Audible's ACX does not accept third-party AI narration at the time of writing). Where the performance is the product, pay the narrator.

Frequently asked questions

How many credits is one hour of audiobook audio?

Roughly 9,000 words of narration at a typical 150 words per minute — about 54,000 characters, so about 54,000 credits on standard voices or 81,000 on Leap Ultra.

Is there a per-book fee?

No. LeapFun bills credits per character generated; plans are monthly with a credit pool. There is no per-project or per-export charge, and one trial Studio project is included on every tier.

Do re-takes cost credits?

Yes, each regenerated paragraph is billed at the voice's rate. Earlier takes remain in version history, so you never pay to recover one.

Can I split a book across two months?

Yes. Projects persist; generate the first half in one billing cycle and the rest in the next, or buy a top-up pack on Creator and above.
