ElevenLabs Review (2026)
Updated October 2, 2026
Short version: ElevenLabs is the broadest voice platform available and still the reference for expressive speech. It is the right choice for dramatic fiction, video dubbing and voice agents. It costs more per minute than most creator tools, and a channel or a book series can outgrow the Creator plan quickly. We make a competing product, so this page sticks to what ElevenLabs publishes and says where we could not confirm something.
What ElevenLabs is
ElevenLabs is a voice AI company whose product covers text to speech, voice cloning, a long-form Studio editor, dubbing, sound effects, a voice isolator, a reader app and a conversational agent platform. Its own pages describe a voice library of more than 10,000 voices and dubbing into 90+ languages.
What ElevenLabs does best
- Expressive range. Its current models take inline audio tags such as [whispers], [laughs] and [sighs], and interpret emotional context from the text itself.
- Breadth. Text to speech, cloning, dubbing, sound effects, voice isolation and agents sit in one account and draw from one credit balance.
- Voice library. More than 10,000 voices shared by its community, plus Voice Design to generate a voice from a text prompt.
- Languages. The Eleven v4 models list 90+ languages; Eleven v3 lists 70+; Multilingual v2 lists 29.
- Developer platform. A documented API with streaming, priced per 1,000 characters.
- Credit rollover. Unused credits carry forward for up to two months on paid plans.
Where it costs you
- Price per minute. ElevenLabs says one minute of audio costs approximately 1,000 characters, which is $0.17 to $0.20 a minute on self-serve plans. See ElevenLabs pricing explained for the table.
- The jump from Creator to Pro. Creator carries 121,000 credits for $22; the next plan is $99. Twenty 10-minute videos a month is about 170,000 credits, which lands between the two.
- Free plan is non-commercial. The terms limit free use to non-commercial purposes; the commercial license starts at Starter.
- Audio quality is tiered. 192 kbps output is listed from the Pro plan; lower plans list 128 kbps.
- Other tools spend the same credits. Dubbing is listed at 2,000 to 10,000 credits per minute, so a few dubbed videos can use a month of narration credits.
What we could not confirm from ElevenLabs' public pages on October 2, 2026: whether the free plan requires attribution, and the per-character credit rate of the v3 and v4 models in the web app.
Who should use ElevenLabs
| Your work | Our call |
|---|---|
| Fiction audio drama, character dialogue, film voiceover | ElevenLabs. Emotional range is the job. |
| Dubbing existing videos into other languages | ElevenLabs. LeapFun does not offer video dubbing. |
| Voice agents or real-time streaming | ElevenLabs. LeapFun's API has no streaming endpoint or voice-agent stack. |
| Weekly YouTube narration on a fixed budget | Compare. A long-form creator tool costs less per minute. |
| Non-fiction audiobooks, series, translated editions | Compare. Chapter workflow and cost per book decide. |
If your work is long-form narration
LeapFun is built for the last two rows. Scripts live in a Studio project as chapters and paragraphs, a late edit is a one-paragraph re-take, every export is loudness-mastered with subtitle files, and a project can be translated into 8 languages and re-narrated with the same voice setup. Creator is $19 a month for 200,000 credits. The trade-offs are real: a smaller voice library, no video dubbing and no streaming API.

Frequently asked questions
Is ElevenLabs worth it?
For expressive fiction, dubbing and voice agents, yes: it is the broadest platform and the reference for emotional delivery. For routine narration at volume, compare cost per minute first, because creator-focused tools are cheaper for that job.
Is ElevenLabs free?
There is a free plan with 10,000 credits a month, about 10 minutes of audio. ElevenLabs' terms limit free use to non-commercial purposes.
What is ElevenLabs best for?
Dramatic narration and character voices, video dubbing into other languages, and real-time voice agents built on its API.
What are the main drawbacks of ElevenLabs?
Cost per minute at volume, a large price step between the Creator and Pro plans, and a shared credit balance that dubbing and other tools draw down quickly.
How many languages does ElevenLabs support?
It depends on the model: 90+ on Eleven v4, 70+ on Eleven v3, 32 on Flash v2.5 and 29 on Multilingual v2, according to ElevenLabs' documentation on October 2, 2026.
What is a good ElevenLabs alternative for long-form narration?
LeapFun is built for it: a chapter-based Studio, paragraph re-takes, mastered exports with subtitles and commercial rights from $6 a month. It does not offer video dubbing or a streaming API.
