LeapFun vs KDP Virtual Voice: Two Routes to an AI Audiobook
Updated October 2, 2026
Short version: These are not rivals so much as two routes. KDP's Virtual Voice turns an eligible Kindle ebook into an Audible audiobook at no cost, with a 40% royalty, but it is an invite-only beta limited to the US store and four languages, Amazon keeps the audio file, and the editing controls are pauses and pronunciation. LeapFun produces a file you can take anywhere except Audible, in 130+ languages, with a full Studio. Many authors will use both: Virtual Voice for Audible, LeapFun for everywhere else.

Side by side
| KDP Virtual Voice | LeapFun Audiobook Studio | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A KDP beta that creates an Audible audiobook from an eligible KDP ebook with computer-generated speech | A creator workspace that turns a manuscript into audio files you export |
| Who can use it | Invite-only beta for eligible KDP ebooks; the ebook must be live, reflowable, with a table of contents, not public domain, and without an existing Audible audiobook | Anyone with an account; the free tier includes one trial Studio project |
| Where it sells | US marketplace only: Amazon, Audible, Amazon Music Unlimited, Alexa | Any store or platform that accepts AI narration, except Audible's ACX; see the table below |
| Languages | English, Spanish, Italian and French | 130+ on Leap Ultra voices; project translation into 8 languages |
| Cost | Free to create during the beta | Credits: an 80,000-word book is roughly two to three Creator months at $19, or one Pro month at $59 |
| What you earn | 40% royalty on a list price you set between $3.99 and $14.99 | Whatever each store pays; Kobo lists 45% and Google Play 52% for auto-narrated titles on their own pages |
| The audio file | KDP's beta terms say Amazon retains ownership of the Virtual Voice edition file; its pages do not mention downloading it | Yours to export and distribute, with commercial rights from the Starter plan |
| Voices | About 80, with a different voice allowed per chapter | 100+ presets, your own cloned voice, or a designed voice |
| Editing | Short, medium or long pauses; pronunciation edits up to 200 characters; start location; voice change. Paragraph pauses cannot be removed | Per-paragraph regeneration with version history, pronunciation rules, emotion tags and a director's note, character casting |
| Mastering and extras | Handled by Amazon | Audiobook preset at 44.1 kHz that reports RMS, peak and bitrate checks; subtitle files; optional music |
| Labelling | Clearly labelled as created by virtual voice, with samples before purchase | Each store sets its own disclosure; Spotify and Kobo add or require one |
| Lock-ins | Ebook and audiobook are locked for editing until the audiobook is live; KDP Select books must keep the audio exclusive to Audible for the enrolment period; no A+ Content, pre-orders or Select promotions on the audiobook | None |
KDP facts are from kdp.amazon.com help topics on audiobooks with virtual voice, including the beta terms, as read on October 2, 2026, and may have changed; the beta terms still say the ebook must be in English while the help pages list four languages. LeapFun figures are on the pricing page and the Audiobook Studio page.
Where an AI-narrated audiobook can be sold
This is the question that decides the route, so here is what each platform's own pages say.
| Platform | AI narration | Route for a LeapFun file |
|---|---|---|
| Audible via ACX | Prohibited. ACX's submission requirements say unauthorized use of text-to-speech, AI or automated recordings is prohibited, and that Audible is working to accept third-party TTS content in future | None today. Audible's AI route is KDP Virtual Voice |
| Spotify for Authors | Accepted with a digital voice narration flag; Spotify adds a sentence to the description and does not share such titles with referral partners | Upload directly |
| Kobo Writing Life | Accepted; list the narrator as Synthesized Voice; 45% of list price at $2.99 or above | Upload directly |
| Google Play Books | Has its own auto-narration (free for a limited time, 50+ voices, 52% share, files downloadable) | Google's own tool, or upload a file where accepted |
| Apple Books | Offers its own digital narration, labelled Narrated by Apple Books, through aggregators, in English | Apple's own tool |
| Voices by INaudio (formerly Findaway) | Accepts digital voice narration only as unmodified packages from Google Play Books or ElevenLabs, with limited distribution and a disclosure; cloned voices count as digital narration | Not accepted; an MP3 cannot enter its digital-narration workflow |
Platform rules are from help.acx.com, support.spotify.com/authors, kobowritinglife.zendesk.com, play.google.com/books/publish/autonarrated, authors.apple.com and voicessupport.inaudio.com as read on October 2, 2026, and may have changed. Check each before you upload.
Which route should you take?
Use KDP Virtual Voice if:
- You have an eligible KDP ebook and an invitation, and Audible is the store that matters.
- English, Spanish, Italian or French is enough, and the US store is enough.
- You are happy with Amazon's voices and with pauses and pronunciation as your only controls.
Use LeapFun if:
- You want a file you own, for Spotify, Kobo, your own site, a course platform or a podcast feed.
- Your book is in a language KDP does not cover, or you want editions in several languages from one project.
- You want your own voice, a cast of character voices, or control over every paragraph.
Use both if:
- You want Audible and everywhere else. Virtual Voice does not stop you from selling a different AI edition elsewhere unless the book is in KDP Select, whose exclusivity applies to any audio edition.
Frequently asked questions
Can I upload a LeapFun audiobook to Audible?
Not through ACX. Its submission requirements prohibit unauthorized text-to-speech, AI or automated recordings. Audible's route for AI narration is KDP Virtual Voice, which uses Amazon's own voices.
Is KDP Virtual Voice free?
KDP's help pages say eligible ebooks can be turned into audiobooks with virtual voice at no cost during the beta. Authors earn a 40% royalty on a list price between $3.99 and $14.99.
Can I download the audio file from KDP Virtual Voice?
KDP's pages do not mention downloading it, and the beta terms say Amazon retains ownership of the Virtual Voice edition file. Treat the audio as living on Amazon.
Which stores accept AI-narrated audiobooks?
Spotify for Authors and Kobo Writing Life accept them with a disclosure, per their own pages. Google Play Books and Apple Books offer their own AI narration. ACX does not accept third-party AI narration, and Voices by INaudio accepts it only from Google Play Books or ElevenLabs.
Can I use KDP Virtual Voice and LeapFun for the same book?
KDP's pages say audiobooks published outside Audible do not affect Virtual Voice eligibility. If the ebook is in KDP Select, its exclusivity applies to any audio edition for the enrolment period.
How much does an AI audiobook cost on LeapFun?
An 80,000-word book is roughly 450,000 characters: about two to three Creator months at $19, or one Pro month at $59, on standard-rate voices. Leap Ultra voices cost about half as much again.
