The Best PlayHT Alternatives After the Shutdown (2026)

Short version: Meta acquired PlayAI, the company behind PlayHT, in July 2025. The service is reported to have closed on December 31, 2025, and on October 2, 2026 the play.ht and play.ai domains no longer resolved. If you narrated videos, podcasts or books with PlayHT, LeapFun is a close replacement. What happened to PlayHT
- July 2025: TechCrunch reported on July 13, 2025 that Meta had acquired PlayAI and that the entire PlayAI team would join Meta. Terms were not disclosed.
- December 31, 2025: Murf's migration guide gives this as the date PlayHT was due to shut down completely, and Inworld's says it shut down permanently on that day. We found no notice from PlayHT or Meta itself, so treat the exact date as reported rather than confirmed.
- Today: on October 2, 2026, play.ht and play.ai did not resolve, and PlayHT's Python SDK repository on GitHub was marked as archived by its owner on April 7, 2026.
Reports that accounts, cloned voices and saved audio were deleted without an export tool come from other vendors and user reviews; we could not verify them. If you still hold original recordings and scripts, those are what you can carry forward.

Moving your work to LeapFun
- Scripts: paste short scripts into Text to Speech. For a series or a book, open a Studio project; it splits the text into chapters and paragraphs.
- Cloned voices: a clone cannot be moved between platforms. Re-clone from your original recordings on the Starter plan or above; consent is confirmed and recorded for each voice.
